The August long weekend is here; the summer seems to going faster than we want. This weekend is the start of Folklorama. I remember going with my Grandmother. She has a booth at one of the pavilions, and I got to see what was happening. I remember the culture displays watching the entertainment and enjoying the food. In my late teens and early twenties, I would go with my friend Cheryl every night to as many pavilions as we could. At that time, it was only on for a week.
One year, we went to all but 3 out of the over 30 different pavilions to try and get every stamp in our passport book. I still go and the last couple of years I have done the bus tour with a cousin. It was much easier as there is no standing in line, you have great seats and they bring you your food and drink.
Ribfest is at The Forks from August 23 to August 25. Sponsored by Rotary of Winnipeg, all the funds raised go to youth groups. The Ribbers for this year are Crabby’s BBQ Shack, Texas Rangers and new for this year Billy’s BBQ. I do love BBQ. There are local food trucks for those who like other foods and local beer from Fort Garry Brewing. There will be live music all weekend from artists from Portage La Prairie, Brandon and Winnipeg. There is also kids’ entertainment on both Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00. The admission is free.
Don’t forget the 50/50 draw at www.ribfestwpg5050.ca. I bought my ticket- have you got yours? More detail to come closer to Ribfest.
This long weekend brings back memories of my parents and their Motorhome going to Grand Forks forCrazy Days (I only went once with them). This was a huge shopping trip for them and my siblings to get school supplies and clothes as the prices in Grand Forks were crazy. My one only trip with them, they had a sale on towels and being a family of 7 we went though a lot a towels a day. My mother had all of us holding towels and standing in line as the prices were over 70% less than at home; some of the towels have lasted over 20 years.
Lets all have a great long weekend.
